10:00 pm. 8th ave & 44th st, Manhattan; Firefighters responded to an All-Hands fire in a parking garage. No one is reported as being injured, but the area sustained damages.
A witness on the scene told Sleuth they were directly across the street as it happened. They showed a video of a cloud of smoke billowing out from the garage and covering the space below. Even after several hours the street retained the smell of smoke.
Police barricaded the area while firefighters controlled the blaze. The blocks caused many to be stuck out of homes and hotels, also causing many to have to leave their cars for the duration of the fire.
After an hour and eight minutes the fire was extinguished.
Detectives from the FDNY are remaining on the scene to do a thorough investigation. There is no word yet as to the cause of the fire.
Sleuth was able to use light-enhancing photography to capture images of the damage in the first floor of the building. The area was completely dark aside flashlights and occasional emergency vehicles passing by. These images can be seen in the gallery below.
